Whenever the seasons change, the trends change. The popular class times seem to want to switch. So, this may not be the last of the schedule changes. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t be shy to comment here.

It is not official just yet, as the the zoning change hasn’t been passed into law. However, it’s nothing but good news! All the comments were positive, it passed third reading, which in english means there is no reason it won’t be passed. Officially, on the next council meeting on June 19th, the change in zoning will be made in to law.

For now it’s time to thank everyone for their help. The posse that showed up to say a few words and show their support was more than effective. I’m pretty sure this new council has yet to see that kind of support at one of their hearings yet. It was well received, and did the trick. For those that couldn’t make it, you were there in spirit. Thanks to you all!
From here, there’s still no news on moving date. But, the plan is to try and be ready as quickly as we can. Of course, bare in mind, that we are still waiting for the june 19th before anything is official. And because of that, it’s still a wait and see of what to do next, and when to start trying to outfit the new gym. I’ll keep you posted. Don’t expect anything to happen until July at the earliest, and I’m not talking July 1st………

Enjoy your long weekend!

This is so easy to make, and with so many ways to change it up. It’s my go to decadence. Ok, truth, Amanda makes one that is way better….. But, the recipe isn’t very calculated. Little bit of this….eye ball that…..little pinch of this……

All the ingredients you can buy at nesters, and I did.

1 package pitted dates for baking
1 package shredded coconut, I use Let’s do it Organic brand, it’s sulphite free
1/4 cup unsweetened cacao powder
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 cap fulls vanilla
1 orange- zest the entire orange, and squeeze the juice in too

You need a food processor:
- Break up the dates in to smaller pieces and add slowly to processor
Continue adding the following and keep blending.
- Add the entire bag of coconut. (I did this for simplicity, however, it probably could have used less, but wanted to leave out as much measuring as possible.
- Add 1/4 cup cacao
- Add 1/4 cup maple syrup (you can use honey here too, but please avoid using agave syrup thinking it’s good for you, it isn’t!)
- Add vanilla
- Add zest of entire orange, and squeeze the juice in too

You should have a nice pasty/sticky lump. Place it at the bottom of a glass baking dish, and place it in the fridge to set. It’s edible as is, but letting it set for a bit will make it easier to cut and serve, as well as not crumble when you eat it.

Most of you by now have heard that Crossfit Whistler has applied to change the zoning to an area in function so that we can relocate the gym. It is by no means set in stone, however, if everything passes through council, we will be moving. I am announcing this on the blog for 2 reasons. 1, it’s already been in the paper. 2, we are going to need your help.

On Tuesday May the 15th, at 6:00pm there will be a public hearing at Millennium Place. It’s a chance for anyone interested to express their support or dissatisfaction to allow recreation in to a zone in function known as IL2 (Industrial Light 2). We would like all the support we can get. The request to change the zoning has passed the first and second reading at council meeting, and this is the last necessary step before it will go to final hearing.

There is a few things I would like to say, to clear the air so to speak about the entire process. Some of you had heard rumours about moving to function for quite sometime, only to hear me say that is just speculation. And the reason I couldn’t announce to the world, and still wish the public wasn’t aware of it, is because of my position with my current landlords. They could easily ask me to leave our current location, or they could also try and raise the rent. All of which are scenarios that I wish not to have happened. And, it appears that they won’t. However, all of which could have occurred, and could have been disastrous. Don’t think for a moment I am not thankful for the relationship I have with my current landlord. I doubt they read this blog, but is so, Thank You.

Also, for those that are curious as to why I want to move to function. We do have a great thing here, and I love Creekside. But…… If you think all we do is make a little noise, you have no idea! When Steve would clean 100kg every 30 sec seconds for 5 minutes. It feels like, and sounds like there’s an earthquake in the liquor store. I know, I’ve witnessed it myself. There are no noise complaints because we play loud music, or have background noise. It’s bottles getting knocked over, the customers nearly having a heart attacks, and it is definitely unfair to them. They should have a fair chance to operate their business in peace. Function is void of those problems.

At the end of the day I am choosing to leave a great area because I feel it’s in everyone’s best interest. I know it’s a longer drive/commute for many of you. It’s also no longer ski in/ski out. All things I wish not to change, but I feel that what we’ll gain, it’s well worth the loss. If indeed the zoning is changed, I apologize in advance for any inconveniences it may cause. But I do know it’ll be well worth it in the long run, we’ll have a better gym because of it.

There’s been a few new retail products arrive this week, all thanks to our friends at Fitness Town. They’ve been hooking us up with all the hot products.

We brought in rage grips, which are ways of protecting your hands from tearing. I need to warn you, they do not make it easier to hold on to the bar, in fact it can be quite the opposite. But, it will allow you to train without tearing, and that, will in turn, allow you to continue your training.

The other new product that has arrived is a wrist guard known as strength wraps. I’ve been wearing those since the games last year. I love’m, they are easy to adjust on the fly, light weight, and easy to wash.

Don’t forget the usual items we stock:
Lacrosse Balls
Skipping ropes
Abmats
Rollers
Log Books

And shoes that are a phone call away:
Nike weightlifting shoes; Romaleos 1 & Romaleos 2.
Inov-8′s; Bare-X, 195′s, 220′s and 230′s

A huge thanks to all the athletes, fans, organizers, volunteers, and supporters. To say this weekend was amazing is an understatement. What an incredible effort by all athletes this weekend. You all deserve to know that everyone watching was in awe of what they saw, and will be trying in various different ways, to be more like you!

I can’t assume that you all know the results of this weekend, so here goes. For those that are unaware of the system, only the top 2 move on to the CrossFit Games in July.

Men:
Jeremy Meredith
Lucas Parker
Steve Howell (Our Hero)

Woman:
Angie Pye
Heather Gillespie
Emily Beers

Team:
Team Taranis
CrossFit Fraser Valley
CrossFit Synergy

How can I not start by talking about Steve’s performance! For some that have been following Steve’s CrossFit career might be saying, it was last year all over again. I couldn’t disagree more! Steve, as always, finished strong by putting up the best time, and finishing first in the last WOD. Quite possibly the hardest WOD of the weekend! I take that back, it was definitely the hardest! He absolutely showed the field what it takes to dig deep. A skill, that by far, Steve is no doubt the class of this region. That, I would agree was a repeat of last year. What was different this year was how much Steve improved on his weaknesses. There was not one single workout to look back on to try and re-write. His performance in all 6 wods was full effort. Yes, he did not win every one, but not due to performance. Steve’s competition this year, just like every other year was stiff. At the end of the day, both Jeremy and Lucas used their strengths to their advantage, and earned their shot to compete at the games. I sound like a broken record, but, Steve, your performance was inspiring. Your cheering section, your boom shirts, the crowd yelling “Boom” after every rep. I can guarantee that every single person watching will try a little harder at the gym this week, try and be more like you. I know I am going to step up my game. And that if I can improve only half as much as you did this year, I’ll be twice the athlete.

I can’t talk about the Men’s division without mentioning Ray Krumme’s performance. If you don’t know Ray, he graces us with his presence about once a month, and uses our workouts as his warm-ups. He is still so raw, but his strength and fitness is through the roof! A top 10 performance in his first CrossFit competition, and it’s only been about a year ago since he started. I’ve said this to most of the Whistler crew watching Ray train. His fitness is no doubt elite, all that needs to happen is a little more time getting mobile, working on positions, flexibility, and when mentioning the top spots, you’ll be talking about Ray.

Because we had no Woman competing in the individual portion, I am going to tell a much shorter story. Angie Pye, showed why she did so well in Last years’ games. She has no weaknesses. Her worst placing was 4th. Seriously?! This year, however, she will not be going with her training partner and friend, and of course our little sweetheart, Alicia Connors. And although Alicia will miss her first games as an individual (She can very well be added to boost Taranis’ team), she did have the highlight of the weekend. During the row/pistol/60kg hang clean, she performed those cleans faster than I thought humanly possible. It absolutely blew my mind. Those were the fastest cleans, at a heavy weight I had ever seen. I sure hope HQ got footage of that performance. I am still in awe! The second place finisher was Heather Gillespie, an athlete I had a pleasure of judging last year. Who, narrowly missed the games last year, had her chance to jump up a few spaces to qualify, and she did just that. A year of training, of year of experience, and a year of not willing to let history repeat itself resulted in a qualifying position.

And last but not least, the teams! It goes something like this….1st, 2nd, 3rd, blah blah, and Crossfit Whistler’s 14th place finish was incredible! We moved up 10 places, which is quite the feet considering both Steve, and Don scores contributed to the 24th place finish. In all seriousness, the team held their own, and showed some heart (As we always do). Most probably the most memorable workout was Marcie and Rob tackling the 70# and 100# Dumbell Snatch respectively. There was quite a bit of pressure, because if they failed to get through the first round of that WOD, we would have DNF’d. It was no DNF, we continued to hang with, and creep our way closer to the top. Overall, it was a great weekend, and magical to be a part of.

I’d personally like to thank all of our community that came out to support. It’s not all that hard to give it everything you’ve got and then some, when all you can hear is a Crossfit Whistler peeps yelling and screaming. Ask Steve, when he was feeling the pain in workout #4, and every time he stood up from a squat, the crowd yelled BOOM! You better believe that kept him moving to do another rep.

If you are curious as to where the title comes from, and why the question mark comes after Athlete, here’s why. I am 100% a fan. 100% a coach. But, when it came to watching the Steve’s, Angie’s, Jeremy’s, Alicia’s, Lucas’s, etc… workout, it is pretty obvious there is a clear cut difference between how they train, and how they perform. I by no means minimize what I do for training, and how I compete, but they are professional crossfit athletes, and I give them all props! Keep pushing the limits of physical fitness, you are unreal.

Even now, as I type this blog, I keep telling myself to close my keyboard and start lifting heavy weights! So, who’s with me, we’ve got a lot of work ahead to get our team back to regionals. And this time, we’re gunning for a top 10!

The 12 month training cycle begins today
